Personal Statement

As I near graduation from the IU Indianapolis Honors College, I can clearly see how my experiences have shaped me into the person I am today. When entering college, I was focused on striving academically by achieving good grades and getting into nursing school. The Honors College gave me the opportunity and resources I needed to succeed by developing into a more reflective, engaged, and purpose-driven individual. Overall, I have grown intellectually, personally, and professionally in ways that have prepared me for my future as a Registered Nurse.

Personal Statement & Professional Identity

As an emerging nursing professional, I am committed to providing compassionate, patient-centered, and evidence-based care. I strive to create a safe and supportive environment for my patients and their families. The Honors College prepared me for this role in three ways: by strengthening my communication and leadership skills, encouraging active engagements in my learning, and developing my ability to think critically and apply research to practice.

Growth from Freshmen Year to Senior Year

Looking back at my freshman year, particularly my HON H200 (Introduction to Honors), I was navigating college and developing my identity as a student. Through assignments like "I Am" and "I Want to Become" statements, I started reflecting on my values and goals. At the time, I described myself as a passionate person ready to help others and eager to succeed academically, while still working to find my balance and confidence.

Now, as a senior, I have become more self-aware, confident, and intentional in my actions. My updated statements reflect my growth and illustrate my transformation as a student into an emerging healthcare professional. This reflection is evidence that my work achieved the Honors College goal of reflecting on my growth as a learner through experiences inside and outside the classroom.

Engaged Learning & Community Impact

One of my most impactful experiences during my Honors journey was completing my honors contract in PHST P105: Giving and Volunteering in America. Through this course, I volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House and interviewed a nonprofit leader. Initially, I felt anxious and was uncertain about conducting an interview, but this experience helped me branch out of my comfort zone and develop confidence in a professional setting.

Through volunteering, I strengthened my therapeutic communication, empathy, and cultural competence. I gained a deeper understanding of the social determinants of health and the importance of supporting families beyond clinical care. This experience strengthened my passion to work at Riley Children's Hospital.

My work with the Ronald McDonald House is evidence that my Honors College goal is to participate in engaged learning experiences and contribute to my community.

Development of Communication, Advocacy, and Patient-Centered Care

My coursework in NURS B253: Collaborative Practice further shaped my understanding of patient care and advocacy. Through analyzing the Lewis Blackman case, I strengthened my values of listening to patients and recognizing early warning signs. This case demonstrated how a lack of communication and proper assessment can lead to preventable outcomes.

Additionally, attending the "Voices of Healing" event and hearing Ted Meyer's experiences as a patient with Gaucher's disease gave me a new perspective on patient-centered care. His use of art therapy highlighted the importance of holistic care and understanding each patient's unique experiences.

These experiences reinforced my belief that nursing is not task-oriented, but rather rooted in advocacy, communication, and empathy. My work in this course is evidence that the Honors College helped me develop strong communication and problem-solving skills.

Growth Through Research & Evidence-Based Practice

Throughout my nursing honors coursework, classes NURS H498 and H370, I developed strong research and critical thinking skills essential in evidence-based nursing practice. Initially, I struggled with finding and analyzing peer-reviewed articles. However, through practice with PICO questions, article evaluation, and collaborative projects, I gained confidence in my ability to interpret and apply research.

In my final honors colloquium course, I contributed to writing a research paper focused on cervical cancer screening among underserved populations. I was responsible for the methods section, which required a deep understanding of research design, inclusion and exclusion criteria, and data collection methods. This experience strengthened my attention to detail, ability to collaborate with a team, and analytical thinking.

My work in these research courses is evidence that the honors college helped me become an active participant in my intellectual experiences as I engaged in research and scholarly work.

Changing Perspectives & Personal Growth

One of the most significant changes in my perspective throughout my honors experience has been my understanding of what it means to be a nurse. The nursing profession requires critical thinking, strong commitment to patient advocacy, and continuous learning.

My clinical experiences have reinforced my values and understanding of the nursing role. Working with pediatric patients and their families has shown me the importance of trust, clear communication, and compassion.

Additionally, I have developed stronger coping skills, learned to accept constructive feedback, and advocate for myself. These skills will help me succeed in the nursing profession.

Connection to Honors Community

Throughout my time in the honors college, I have developed a strong sense of community. I have built meaningful relationships that have supported my growth, and becoming an honors peer mentor truly strengthened my connection to the honor community and allowed me to mentor students and give back to the program that helped shape me.

This involvement reflects how the honors college helped me develop connections with my community and peers, as well as open my opportunities to service experiences like volunteering at Riley Children's Hospital.

Preparation for the Future

The honors college has prepared me to be a future Registered Nurse by interconnecting my skills, knowledge, and confidence. I am now approaching graduation and preparing to take the NCLEX to work on a pediatric hematology/oncology unit.

Looking ahead, I plan to continue growing as a nurse by staying current with research, building strong relationships with my team, and providing the highest quality care to my patients. The foundation I have built through the honors college will continue to guide me as I enter the professional world.

Conclusion

My honors college experience has transformed me from a student focused on academic success into a reflective, compassionate, engaged future nurse. Through coursework, service, research, and clinical experiences, I have developed the skills necessary to guide success in my future career to make a meaningful impact on the lives of patients and their families. I have gained a deeper understanding of myself, my values, and my purpose for wanting to be a nurse.
