Intention Statements

The following intention statements, including "I am" and "I want to become", were completed during my freshman and senior years. They provided an opportunity to reflect on how I viewed myself at each stage in my college experience and the person I aspire to be in the future. I used these statements to guide my short- and long-term goals, align my decisions with my values, and continue striving to be the best version of myself.

I Am Statement - Spring 2023

I am passionate about positively impacting other people's lives by volunteering or just simply helping someone in need. I fulfill this passion by volunteering at Riley Children's Hospital and interacting with the patients and healthcare workers. I am a detail oriented, organized, academic driven women. I follow through with my goals and am a responsible, trustworthy friend and employee. I am a bookworm that loves to learn new things. I love to get involved in my community and within IUI, so balancing my priorities is something I have developed and am still improving on.

I Want to Become Statement - Spring 2023

I want to get into nursing school, maintain a high GPA, and receive my Registered Nursing license by graduating college. After receiving my BSN, I plan on taking a gap year to gain valuable work experience. Next, I want to attend graduate school to receive my Doctorate Nursing Practice. In the future, I want to participate in the traveling nurse program. Outside of the workplace, one of my life goals is to become a trustworthy and dependable role model. I want to have a loving, loyal family and become an attentive, understanding friend. Above and beyond all of my ambitions and dreams, I want to become a happy and motivated woman.

Reflection

When I wrote these two statements (I Am & I Want to Become), I was a recent high school graduate still adjusting to the expectations and pace of college-level coursework. I was exploring my interests within health sciences and beginning to better understand the academic and personal responsibilities that come with pursuing a career in healthcare. At that time, I was focused on finding my footing and developing the skills and confidence needed to succeed in college.

I Am Statement - Spring 2026

I am a time-oriented, academically driven student. I am passionate about caring for pediatric patients, as well as my friends and family. I value self-growth and perseverance. I spend my time reflecting and improving upon the skills I have through journaling. I strive to help students and people in the community through volunteering.

I Want to Become Statement - Spring 2026

I want to become a Registered Nurse who has patients looking up to them, trusting them, and feeling a sense of overall safety. I want to stay current with my practice and knowledge. I want to cultivate a supportive, collaborative environment within my team. I want to maintain a healthy work life balance as a new graduate.

Re-creating these intention statements, I am able to see my growth professionally, academically, and personally. My experiences have shaped my values, commitment to learning, and future goals. I have the same passions that I had freshman year, but I am closer to achieving them, which is rewarding and extremely exciting. Today I have worked towards who I want to become by creating weekly goals for myself, staying attentive in school, working at Riley Children's Hospital, and continuing to journal.

Journey Map

A journey map is a visualization of how someone gets from one point to another. My journey map starts with the day I was born and includes the monumental moments in my life that have made me the person I am today, as well as the person I hope to be in the future. I have included my freshman year (spring 2023) and senior year (spring 2026) journey maps.

Spring 2023

Above is my old journey map from Freshman year (Spring 2023). I have been working towards my goals every day since then. I have gotten into nursing school and am now coming up on graduating here soon. I have also got a job at Riley Children's Hospital as a Patient Care Technician, which has always been my dream. The ambitions of my future have not changed, other than possibly not going for my NP license anymore, but still undecided. My ambitions are also stated in my journey map from my Senior year (Spring 2026) below. I am proud of myself overall. I have been able to strengthen my skills of perseverance, communication, and responsibility every year by trying to become the best version of myself. I cannot wait for what the future has in store for me as an RN.

Spring 2026

I am closer to taking the NCLEX and becoming an RN than I was in my Freshman year. I hope to work on a Hematology/Oncology unit, which I have never envisioned for myself. I love the team, patient populations, and patients so much that I have fallen in love with the 5W unit at Riley Children's Hospital. It all seemed so far away, but I am thankful for my growth and the weaknesses that have become strengths. I am more myself than I ever have before. I have strengthened my coping skills, acceptance of constructive feedback, and advocacy for myself. I learned that the vision I have for my future is rooted in my values that have strengthened the same throughout college.
